PREVENTING ROTATOR CUFF INJURIES

Physical Therapy in WoodburyRotator cuff injuries can be very debilitating and can be a season-ending injury for many athletes.  If you have recently suffered this unfortunate injury, then contact All Star Physical Therapy in Nassau County today for more information about how we can help you.

rotator cuff is considered to be the group of muscles and tendons that are near the shoulder joint, which keeps your upper arm bone together with the shoulder socket. A rotator cuff injury can be excruciatingly painful, and it requires an immense amount of care. In many cases, surgery is required and it can take months to get back to your normal self, therefore you must get the proper care needed if you suffer from a torn rotator cuff. Visit our Woodbury physical therapy office if you have recently injured your rotator cuff. At All-Star Physical Therapy, we understand you want to get back to your daily activities as soon as possible, so we ensure that you get the proper care in a timely fashion.

ROTATOR CUFF EXERCISES

Working out and stretching your rotator cuff is a great way you can prevent a rotator cuff injury from occurring. Some exercises that can be done to improve your strength or mobility in your rotator cuff are:

  • Arm Reach
  • Lying Down External Rotation
  • Pendulum
  • Crossover Arm Stretch
  • Lawnmower
  • Doorway Stretch
  • Two Arm Wall Stretch

These exercises can be a difference-maker in your shoulder pain. They will also help you prevent a rotator cuff injury in the future. If you want to learn more about these exercises or other exercises that you can do for your rotator cuff, please visit our physical therapy clinic in Woodbury!

RECOVERY PROCESS

If you do suffer from a rotator cuff injury, the recovery process can be a long and brutal one. The recovery process for a rotator cuff injury consists of:

  • Phase 1: Passive Motion
    • The therapist moves your shoulder without placing tension on the repair.
  • Phase 2: Active Motion
    • You can move your arm on your own, however, not against resistance.
  • Phase 3: Strengthening
    • This is the most important phase because all of the muscles become weak from the injury. Heavyweights are not necessary.
  • Phase 4: Full Activity
    • It usually takes 4-6 months to reach full recovery from the injury.

This shows the importance of the exercises listed above. If you do not give your rotator cuff enough attention, you may have to go through this recovery process, or worse.

Possible Causes of Hip Pain

Causes of hip pain can vary from person to person depending on their age, gender, and level of activity.  If you are an athlete, your chances of enduring a hip injury are more likely.  Read below for possible causes to your hip pain:

  • Arthritis (both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis cause pain in the hip)
  • Bursitis physical therapy in woodbury
  • Muscle strain
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Tendinitis
  • Hip labral tear
  • Hip fracture
  • Avascular necrosis / osteonecrosis
  • Lyme disease
  • Lupus
  • Sciatica

How Can Physical Therapy Help

Physical therapy treatment for the hip often consists of manual therapy and strengthening exercises to open and stabilize the hips. Our goal is to improve range of motion and eventually help you return you to optimal functioning.

Specific exercises will be prescribed to build support for the hip joints, commonly targeting the outer and inner thighs, glutes, and lower back muscles. Resistance training may be incorporated.

Building strength is important in treatment, but so is building your flexibility. If you’ve never stretched out your hips, chances are they are pretty tight, especially if you spend long periods sitting down.

  • Soft tissue manipulation

Your physical therapist will manually push and knead your muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. This is useful for releasing tension and improving mobility.

  • Instrument assisted mobilization

Incorporating physical therapy instruments into your treatment provides a great boost to your recovery. This type of therapy can be greatly beneficial for breaking up scar tissue or adhesions around the muscles, which frequently cause pain and limit mobility.
