Physical Therapy Roslyn NY

What Are The Different Types of Physical Therapy?

There are six different types of physical therapy that physical therapists use for treatment. The type that is used depends on a variety of factors and is different for every person. Sometimes physical therapists may even use a hybrid of several different types for one patient. The six types of physical therapy are:

  • Pediatric Physical Therapy– This type is used on children who may have physical developmental issues including weak muscles or health conditions.
  • Geriatric Physical Therapy- This type of therapy is for older adults who may be experiencing muscle weakness or other health conditions. Sometimes these things cause people to compensate with other body parts which can cause pain there as well.
  • Vestibular Rehabilitation- This focuses solely on balancing. Physical therapists use this therapy to figure out why you might have balancing issues and how you can work to become more balanced.
  • Neurological Physical Therapy- Many conditions can cause neurological issues. These issues can often be chronic and cannot be fully resolved but physical therapy can help to reduce it!
  • Orthopedic Physical Therapy- This therapy focuses on injuries a patient may have experienced that cause pain or muscle weakness. Physical therapists will focus on the injured area and work to strengthen it.
  • Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Physical Therapy- Heart/ circulation problems can be very serious and chronic but this type of physical therapy can help.

Physical therapy in Roslyn, NY uses all of these types of physical therapy methods for our patients. We think it is important to treat each patient differently and according to their concerns and pain! Come see us today to learn more about our rehabilitation clinic!

  • De Quervain’s TendinitisIt causes pain from the thumb side of the wrist to your forearm. The pain comes from the inflammation and irritation of your wrist tendons that are at the base of your thumb.
  • Carpel Tunnel Syndrome – This is considered to be one of the most common nerve disorders, which causes pain in the wrist and hands.
  • Fractures – A broken hand or wrist can be excruciatingly painful. If you do break your hand or wrist, you may also feel stiffness, swelling, and notice a loss of movement.
  • Arthritis – Arthritis is the main cause of hand pain. It causes the joints in the hands to lose cartilage, which will result in pain, swelling, and stiffness. This occurs because once the cartilage starts to deteriorate, your bones are not able to move as smoothly.
  • Trigger Finger – This is when your fingers or thumb get locked in a bent position.

These five causes of hand and wrist pain can be very painful if you do not treat them properly. Physical Therapy is a great way to help relieve the pain from all of these conditions.

How can Physical Therapy Roslyn NY help

Physical therapy treatment for the hip often consists of manual therapy and strengthening exercises to open and stabilize the hips. Our goal is to improve range of motion and eventually help you return you to optimal functioning.

Exercise

Specific exercises will be prescribed to build support for the hip joints, commonly targeting the outer and inner thighs, glutes, and lower back muscles. Resistance training may be incorporated.

Stretch

Building strength is important in treatment, but so is building your flexibility. If you’ve never stretched out your hips, they may be very tight and eventually cause you pain.  Living a sedentary lifestyle can attribute to hip pain as well.  Being proactive about your discomfort is the best way to improve it.  Simply hoping for the pain to diminish on its own will rarely be a solution.

Soft tissue manipulation

Your physical therapist will manually push and knead your muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. This is useful for releasing tension and improving mobility.

Instrument assisted mobilization

Incorporating physical therapy instruments into your treatment provides a great boost to your recovery. This type of therapy can be greatly beneficial for breaking up scar tissue or adhesions around the muscles, which frequently cause pain and limit mobility.

How can we help?

After gathering a full medical history, your physical therapist will perform a thorough physical examination to identify the cause of your pain and also determine a baseline to compare your progress against. They will then devise a treatment plan to help you recover as quickly and safely as possible. Treatment methods may include but are not limited to:

Targeted neck and back stretches will be prescribed to loosen and reduce tension in the back muscles. Over time, you will see a great improvement in your mobility and range of motion.

In addition to providing stress relief and relaxation, massage therapy is a great technique for releasing tension in the back and increasing blood flow to promote healing.

An exercise plan will be developed, aimed at strengthening the muscles that support the back and taking pressure off of the spine.

To amplify the effectiveness of stretch and exercise, heat may be applied before the activity to warm up the muscles and ice afterward to promote recovery.

Electrical muscle stimulation delivers electrodes to the muscles to improve circulation and tissue regeneration. This is especially helpful in keeping muscles active when movement and exercise are difficult.

What Are Common Sports Injuries?

Injury is the biggest fear of any up-and-coming athlete, and this is completely reasonable. Nothing is more crushing than having movement restricted or even being unable to play the way you used to. Sports injuries can bench millions of people, but understanding what causes the injuries can help mitigate the risk of playing a sport. By going over the most common injuries, you can prevent this while still doing what you love. If you are injured, though, please consult All-Star PT for physical therapy in Roslyn NY. We can help you get back on your feet!

Common Sports Injuries

Injuries vary from sport to sport. Each sport carries its own unique risk, but many can be prevented with the same degree of caution. However, there are generally two main types of injuries. Chronic injuries develop over time, and acute injuries, which can happen at a moment’s notice. Now, let’s examine some of the most common sports injuries:

  • Achilles tendinitis: A brutal band of tissue that connects your calf and heel bone, it can commonly be injured during sports that require running. If you don’t stretch enough, overexert yourself, or wear the right shoes, you can injure yourself.
  • Broken bones: This can occur in any sport. Fractures are common too.
  • A dislocation occurs when your bones are knocked out of their normal position, common in contact sports.
  • Jumper’s Knee: When the tissue that connects your knee and thigh muscles to your shin is injured. As with the name, jumping can cause this. Hard surfaces and being overweight expedite this process.
  • Rotator cuff injuries: The rotator cuff is what helps your shoulder move and keeps it stable. Repetitive actions like baseball, swimming, or tennis can cause this chronic injury.
  • Runner’s knee: Anything that causes you to bend your knee contributes repeatedly.
  • Shin splints: Your shin becomes inflamed and painful, common during running and basketball.
  • Sprains and Strains: A sprain is a stretch or tear of a ligament, and a strain is a stretch or tear of a muscle.
  • Tennis Elbow: Caused by overuse of the elbow. Tennis players, obviously, and golfers are prone to it.

All-Star PT – Physical Therapy in Roslyn NY

With knowledge of all of these injuries, you can work to prevent them from occurring. Proper stretching, equipment, and care for your body are all necessary! We can’t control everything, though, which is where All-Star PT comes in. If you need physical therapy in Roslyn NY for any injury, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

Physical Therapy For Knee Sprains

Did you know that knee sprains are one of the most common injuries in people who exercise or participate in sports? These injuries can negatively impact a person’s quality of life, performance at work, and recreation/athletic endeavors because they limit a person’s ability to do everyday activities and favorite recreational or competitive activities. Visit All-Star physical therapy roslyn ny if you are suffering from a knee sprain today. Contact us to learn more about how we can help with your pain!

Physical Therapy Roslyn NY: Treatment and Prevention

As opposed to a complete tear of the ligaments during knee sprain, partial tears are healed with specific types of exercise. After a knee sprain, patients typically focus on flexibility and strengthening exercises such as leg lifts or squats during physical therapy. These exercises allow for proper healing of torn muscle fibers and gradually restore muscle strength, allowing for normal use of the injured ligaments. Visit Physical Therapy Roslyn NY for your knee injury today!

Physical Therapy Roslyn NY

Wearing a brace during physical therapy can also help patients by providing support for their knees. Protecting it from further sprain or pain during physical activity that places stress on it. However, using a brace too often after recovering from an injury may slow the healing process because the patient relies more on the brace than the injured ligaments to support the knee. Braces are typically worn during physical therapy exercises that focus on balance and weight-bearing activities that stress the knees rather than during flexibility or strengthening exercises. People who don’t wear braces often after recovering from a knee sprain can usually return to normal daily activities within two weeks.

Symptoms of a Knee Sprain

  • Painful movement of the knee after a sprain or strain
  • Pain in the front of the knee while walking
  • Putting weight on your injured leg while walking
  • Pain in front of your knee when you are sitting down on the floor and try to get up
  • Pain in the back of your knee while walking on level ground or downstairs
  • Swelling around the front of your knee

All-Star PT – Physical Therapy Roslyn NY

However, there are many different treatment options for knee sprains, depending on the severity of the sprain. Physical therapy is one option that can help alleviate symptoms of a mild sprain and prevent further injury or re-injury. Although, severe sprains may require surgery to repair the torn ligaments. Many physical therapists will recommend wearing either an immobilizing brace or a compression wrap during physical therapy. This helps to facilitate the healing process and support the knee. Visit All-Star physical therapy roslyn ny if you are suffering from a knee sprain today. Contact us to learn more about how we can help with your pain!
