TREATING YOUR HIP PAIN

Hip problems have become very common and can be caused by many different reasons. About 15% of elderly people report that they have hip pain. Although it is more common in people 65 and older, it can still occur in anyone.

The hip is made up of two major parts known as the hip socket (acetabulum) and the thighbone (femur). A pillow of cartilage helps limit friction as the hip bone moves when using the hip. Although the hip bone is quite strong, with time and usage, the cartilage can become damaged, which generates hip pain. Your hip is responsible for daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, sitting and running so hip pain can really limit your day-to-day routine. This pain can sometimes be very unbearable so making sure you get treatment from a physical therapist is very important.

CAUSES OF HIP PAIN

  • Cancer
    • Bone cancer
    • Leukemia

HOW PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP YOUR HIP PAINPhysical Therapy in Plainview

At All-Star Physical Therapy in Plainview, we have years of experience in dealing with hip pain. We will show you special techniques and exercises that will help to alleviate the pain that is bothering you, as well as strengthen your hip joint and surrounding muscles to ensure future injury prevention.  See below for 3 exercises to help hip pain:

  1. Hip Bridges
    • This exercise is one of the most simple to perform.  You must begin by laying on your back, then bring your feet closer to your body.  Push your hips up, while squeezing your glutes and hold for a few seconds, release tension and lower your hips back down to the floor, repeat several times.
  1. Air Squats
    • This exercise requires no extra weight to reap the benefits.  Start by standing straight up, eyes forward, feet shoulder-width apart.  Bend down, keeping your heels flat on the ground. You know that you have squatted deep enough when your hips are parallel to your knees, and it feels as if you could be sitting in a chair if it were placed under you. Make sure your back is straight, shoulders are pinched, and you are looking forward and not down at the ground.  Exhale as you push back up to a forward position. Repeat several times.
  1. Hip Stretches
    • These stretches should be performed before and after strenuous activity to make sure you are warming up your muscles and making sure you are preventing any type of injury from occurring.  Examples of stretches you can do are the child’s pose and the twist. These stretches are very effective in ensuring that you will be prepared for any physical activity you are about to undergo.

Seeing a physical therapist can help control the pain and improve your mobility. With hip pain, it is hard to walk around normally and do your daily activities. PHYSICAL THERAPY IN PLAINVIEW FOR ELBOW PAIN

Pain Treatment Plainview NYIf you have suffered an injury to your elbow and are searching for physical therapy in Plainview, our experienced team at All-Star Physical Therapy is here to help you.

IDENTIFYING THE ELBOW JOINT

Most elbow injuries are due to overuse or stress of the elbow joint. Elbow pain is any pain that comes from the joints or structures adjacent to the joint such as the shoulder, upper arm, and wrist/hand joints. Your elbow is formed where three bones meet, the humerus (upper arm bone), the ulna, and the radius (both are bones that make up the forearm). Each bone has cartilage at the end of it used as a cushion. When the cushion is worn out it can cause pain in the elbow.

The pain can be anywhere from mild discomfort to a sharp sensation. Around 20-50% of tennis players reported having elbow pain, but it is just as common for anyone to have this pain. In most cases (around 75%) the pain is in the dominant arm, so it is very important to visit All-Star Physical Therapy in Plainview so that you have no restrictions. Our treatment plans are tailored to your specific needs!

HOW SPORTS INJURIES EFFECT YOU MENTALLY

Believe it or not, if you injure yourself, it typically affects you mentally. For some athletes, the psychological reply to an injury can result in a mental health issue. For example, players may not want to make the same gesture or movement because they are worried that the same injury will occur. Some other feelings that can occur after you injure yourself are:

  • Sadness
  • Isolation
  • Irritation
  • Anger
  • Frustration
  • Disengagement
  • Sleep Loss

It’s vital that if you injure yourself, you take care of yourself physically and mentally. If you only recover physically but not mentally then not only will you not be the same player, but you are more likely to get injured because you have that mindset.

FAQ’S

How Does Physical Therapy Help Inflammation?
Physical therapy is a great way to treat muscle inflammation because it will help heal as well as prevent it and any other further injury. Physical therapy will help by using various exercises and hands-on manual therapy remedies. Each individual and each injury is unique, as should the technique being used to help treat it.

How Can Physical Therapy Help Sciatica?
The proper course of action for treating sciatica is dependent on the root cause of the condition. Often, sciatica is caused by a problem in the lower back like a herniated or spinal stenosis. Physical therapy is often very successful in treating these causes, and many people report that their sciatica clears up within four to six weeks. It is important to note that those who are dealing with sciatica are encouraged to continue exercising. Exercise will strengthen the muscles and bones surrounding the nerve, and can also improve the flexibility of the nerve itself. These benefits will decrease your chances of having more flareups in the future.

What are Common Causes of Hip Pain?
Many things can cause pain in the hip, such as wearing down of cartilage, injury, or a broken bone. The most common causes of hip pain include: Injuries like bursitis, dislocation, hip fracture, hip labral tear, hernia, tendinitis, and sprains can all cause pain in the hip. In older adults, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are some of the leading causes of hip pain. Most of us have heard of sciatica, which can cause hip pain, as well as sacroiliitis and meralgia paresthetica. Other conditions like avascular necrosis (death of bone tissue because of decreased blood flow), osteoporosis, and osteomyelitis (a bone infection) could also be the cause of your hip pain.

What Should You Do After Your ACL Tear?
When you suffer an ACL tear, there are a few different options for treatment depending on the severity of your case. When you become injured, you may have some knee swelling within a few hours of your injury, and knee pain when you put weight on the afflicted leg. To take care of yourself at home, you can follow the R.I.C.E. method to help reduce swelling and pain. You can also take OTC pain medication like ibuprofen to reduce pain and swelling. You should not partake in any sports or other physical activities until you speak with your doctor and find out what treatment is best for you. Physical therapy is necessary after you tear your ACL because it will help you regain strength in your leg. The exercises you will perform will also help you restore normal knee function and help you prevent future injuries!

Differences Between a Sprain and a Strain?
A joint sprain involves the overstretching or tearing of ligaments. Ligaments are tissues that connect two bones in a joint. One of the most common locations for a sprain is the ankle joint. A strain in the joint is overstretching or tearing of muscles and or tendons. Tendons are cords of tissue that connect bones to muscles. The most common areas for muscle strain are the hamstring and the lower back.

Does Physical Therapy Help Knee Arthritis?
Mainly knee arthritis starts due to old age, but that is not the only cause that starts it. It can be caused by being overweight. Constant pressure on your joints, especially on your knees from being overweight, can cause your knees to wear down over time, which will then cause pain and fatigue, which then can lead to arthritis. Physical therapy can be beneficial to you because it will help you gain knowledge of the proper way to go about joint pain and will be guided on how to stretch out your muscles properly.
