Knee InjuriesLicensed Physical Therapists, NY

The knee is constructed with various muscles, ligaments, and tendons that allow the knee to support your leg as well as allow for movement. Obtaining a knee injury can be very painful, depending on the source of the damage. Knee injuries are likely to occur during a fall or athletes. Some common knee injuries we treat are as followed:

  • Knee Dislocation
  • Torn Ligament
  • Contusion of the Knee
  • Torn Tendon
  • Torn Meniscus
  • Knee Sprain

If you endure one or multiple of these knee injuries, it usually requires a long recovery process. Physical therapy is a great way to rehabilitate the knee since you can complete exercises and stretches that strengthen the muscles, ligaments, and tendons that support the knee. Some prominent physical therapy treatments are; swimming, aquatic exercise, walking, yoga, and various other tailored exercises based on the specific injury. Physical therapy can be both a step to try before surgery to see if it will be successful and the following surgery to help in the recovery process. There are many benefits to physical therapy when it comes to knee injuries. Some ways physical therapy can help rehabilitate a knee injury is as follows;

  • Strengthening: A knee injury can impact the function of your entire leg; if your injury is severe enough where you can not walk or stand, this is going to affect the muscles, joints, ligaments, and tendons throughout the entire leg. But by going through physical therapy, you will be practicing stretches and exercises that strengthen your leg’s functionality to support your knee. Strengthening the whole leg helps reduce stress and tension on your knee injury and allows for the injury to slowly regain its mobility and strength to heal.
  • Restoring Range of Motion: Certain stretches and exercises taught by a physical therapist can be uncomfortable and, in ways, painful since you are manipulating the leg and knee in different ways to restore mobility and range of motion. This is important because your knee is detrimental to your ability to walk, stand, run, bend, etc. By utilizing physical therapy treatment methods, they will be tailored to the rehabilitation range of motion of your knee to restore full functionality.
  • Stimulation: Electrical stimulation of the knee can help with pain management and strengthen muscles, ligaments, and tendons within the knee joint. This form of treatment is painless to the patient and is applied to the knee’s skin to release the electric shock waves through the knee.

By seeking a physical therapist for a knee injury treatment, you allow for strengthening and rehabilitation on your terms and pace. It allows for a customized treatment plan that is best suited for your needs and capabilities. To find out more about physical therapy, NY, visit our website for knee injuries.
